Force transducers

Sensors for measuring tensile and compressive forces on crane structures, direct or indirect, as a standard model or as a custom-made unit.

Operating principle

Strain gauges in a Wheatstone bridge

Force transducers convert the mechanical strain in their steel body into an electrical signal via bonded strain gauges connected in a Wheatstone bridge. Optionally with a built-in measurement amplifier (4…20 mA), in a 2-wire (HART) or 3-wire configuration.

Sensor types

Direct tensile-force measurement in the cable end attachment. On request with maintenance-free spherical bearings for a more precise result.

Load pins

The classic installation in sheaves or in the cable end attachment, suited to retrofitting load measurement into existing structures. Optionally with a lubrication bore (conical or flat grease nipple) and sealed grooves.

Compression load cells

Direct force measurement at the highest accuracy class, with ideal force introduction when paired with a compact bearing or load corner. Primarily for compressive forces; some models also measure tensile forces via an adapter.

Wire rope tension sensors

Indirect load measurement via the lateral deflection of the rope. Mountable on the hoist rope after the fact, suitable for ropes from 6 mm diameter, a cost-effective solution for retrofit load monitoring.

Strain transducers

Indirect measurement of the force acting in parallel. Two welded-on brackets on the structural element under monitoring; the sensor is bolted in place. Also well suited to retrofit load monitoring.

Custom-made units

When the standard doesn’t fit

For one-off crane installations, such as Goliath gantry cranes with around 1,500 tonnes capacity, we manufacture measuring rings and other special forms that go beyond the standard programme. The choice of sensor type depends on the installation situation and the structure; consulting up front clarifies what fits best technically and economically.
